Fishing is sort of an annoying minigame until you get the hang of it.

To fish in the game, you'll need the Angler life that gets unlocked part of the way through the main story. Then for the actual minigame...

How to fish

  1. On land, you go up to a fish and see if the speech bubble with the fishing prompt appears. 20250529161059_1 20250529161106_1

  2. You press that button (A for me) and you'll cast your line into the body of water.

  3. The fish will nibble the line and your controller will buzz a bit. Wait until the double red !! marks appear. Then you press that button and you're in the fishing minigame. 20250529161120_1 20250529161125_1

  4. The minigame is a stationery version of all of the other gathering. You "move" by rotating your left thumb stick and it'll move around your cursor. The middle is where the fish is and your arrow is the direction you want to pull. 20250529161125_2

  5. You can peek like the other gathering minigames to see if you can find the sweet spot with the Y button.

  6. The small triple dot bubble means that the sweet spot is in the opposite direction so go a full 180 degrees. 20250529161128_1

  8. Do your fancy fishing moves and you'll get it. 20250529161144_1

Fishing health bar

Both the fish and your rod will have health bars.

  • If your rod health goes to the bottom, you'll lose the fish.
  • Attacking the fish's sweet spot raises the rod's health by a bit. This is very important on the Lord fishes
  • Attacking any other spot lowers your rod's health by a good amount. It isn't forgiving like the other gathering skills
  • Use peek. A lot.

Peek tricks

The trick I found with this is to use the half-circle trick. It might sound dumb but here's how it works:

  1. Pick half of a circle to peek. peek1
  2. Peek on that half ONLY.
  3. The trick is that you'll either find the triple dot or the double !! somewhere in that half. This way you aren't wasting time peeking in a giant circle while the rod's health decline.
  4. If you get the triple dot, go to the opposite side and start yanking your rod. exclamation
  5. If you get the exclamation mark instead, start yanking.
